A look at the toddler years, 18 months through 3 years.

The Pre-Primary room

In the Pre-Primary room, children build the independence and language they are already reaching for. The environment is rich in language materials. There are many chances to practice emerging social skills. The Practical Life area is full of activities that foster independence and concentration, refine motor skills, and build self-esteem.

Children work on self-care. They learn to wash their hands, put on their shoes, and put on their jackets. Grace and courtesy lessons happen all through the day, encouraging respectful treatment of friends, teachers, and the environment. Under a teacher's careful guidance, children choose activities independently and move freely to explore. They are given ample time to finish what they start, at their own pace.

The staff bring the tenderness, warmth, and patience this age needs. The program meets each child where they are and lets them set the pace.

What to expect

01

Primary (3 Years Through Kindergarten)

In our Primary classroom, we foster the process of self-creation by providing an environment in which each child can develop independently at his or her own pace while still gaining those social, physical, intellectual and emotional skills needed to develop to his/her full potential. Our environment is designed to provide the child with the opportunity to interact with as many aspects of the world as possible (at their own level).

What this looks like in practice

A Pre-Primary day leans on language and independence. Children choose activities under a teacher's guidance and move freely around the room. The Practical Life area holds materials for pouring, sorting, and fastening, which build concentration and refine motor skills. They practice washing hands and putting on shoes and jackets. Grace and courtesy lessons run all day, every day.

What you notice at home is a child who wants to do things alone. They reach for their own jacket and work the zipper. They carry a plate to the sink. At school, ample time to finish what they start, at their own pace, is what builds that. Language materials feed the words they bring to the dinner table.
